No deal in sight as talks end in Washington; both sides avoid escalating rhetoric.

Trade talks between the U.S. and China broke off on Friday with no agreement announced hours after President Trump raised the tariff level on $200 billion of imports from China.

In tweets Friday afternoon, Mr. Trump called the two days of talks “candid and constructive” but said tariffs will stay in place pending the result of future negotiations. He said his relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping “remains a very strong one and conversations into the future will continue.”
