Strangling The Facts
< < Go Back
What to Know: A new San Antonio Express-News editorial says property tax reform would “strangle” local governments.
“State lawmakers continue to move forward with plans to strangle cities, urban counties and school districts,” it reads. “They call these plans property tax reform. Look, we get it. Texans are sick of sky-high property taxes, but lawmakers are prescribing the wrong medicine with proposed revenue caps on cities, counties and school districts. The key to property tax relief is better funding for education — and lawmakers are rightfully pursuing this. But their continued push to limit property tax growth for cities, urban counties and school districts is counterproductive and potentially crippling.”
The TPPF Take: The property tax reform measures in Senate Bill 2 would do nothing of the sort.
“Strangle is a strange way to describe a plan that lets voters decide on big tax increases,” says TPPF’s James Quintero. “The fact is local officials have nothing to fear from tax reform so long as their needs are justifiable. Folks should trust voters to support legitimate increases.”
