Mass Shootings

Nine Killed in Shootings Near Frankfurt, With Suspect Found Dead

from The Wall Street Journal,

The suspect in several shootings that killed nine people Wednesday night in central Germany was found dead at his house, police said early on Thursday without adding any information on possible motives.

The attacks took place around 10 p.m. local time when what police initially said were several gunmen opened fire on patrons of a hookah lounge in downtown Hanau, near Frankfurt, and then fled in a dark vehicle, police said. They later resumed shooting in another part of town. German politics, long dominated by the traditional parties of the center, has grown more polarized and strident since the 2015 refugee crisis. Since then, almost two million asylum seekers have entered the country. The vocally anti-immigration Alternative for Germany entered parliament in 2017 for the first time, becoming the largest opposition group in the chamber. Its poll ratings have since plateaued however, and it was overtaken by the Greens in opinion surveys last year.
