According to LinkedIn, America’s cities are losing their shine: Eight out of the top 10 largest metro areas in the U.S. — regions with robust economies like New York, San Francisco and L.A. — lost residents in 2018, The New York Times reports. High costs of living and a lack of opportunity for those without college degrees are sending many people packing. In 1960, a janitor moving from the Deep South to Silicon Valley could expect 107% earnings boost after housing costs, according to The Times.
