MSNBC has confirmed that a series of maps recently aired during a live segment on the growing conflict in Israel were “factually wrong” and that corrected maps would be re-broadcast on Monday.

The Washington Free Beacon reported the gaffe on Sunday, printing a statement from a MSNBC spokesperson who told the paper:

In an attempt to shed light on the geographic context of the Israeli-Palestinian issue, we aired a map that was factually wrong.

In the disputed graphic, MSNBC showed a map of the Middle East in which Israel appeared to be stealing land from the Palestinian territory.

His mea culpa almost directly contradicts what he said on-air when asked by Snow, an MSNBC anchor, if he believed the areas in the Middle East occupied by Palestine would continue to shrink in years to come based upon the graphic shown on-screen.

Fletcher told viewers at the time:

Well, absolutely, of course, this is what it’s all about, it’s all about the land. I must say it’s pretty shocking when you present it this way. … More of those green areas, more of that Palestinian land will be eaten up by Jewish settlements.”

In the 1946 map, the territories are shown before the United Nations Treaty of 1947 that created a permanent state of Israel. As a result, the map makes it appear that Israel “stole” most of its land from the Arab territory in order to become an official nation.

As the Jerusalem Post notes, Palestine was under British Mandatory rule until May of 1948. Thus, it never existed as an independent state from which land could be “stolen” from.

In fact, the image used by the network is one that is often criticized by scholars and anti-Semitism watchdog groups for its frequent use in anti-Israeli propaganda.
