For Americans, the U.S.-Mexico border has proven to be a highly controversial area, especially when it comes to the appropriateness and effectiveness of a wall separating the two countries.

Those against the building of a U.S.-Mexico wall often argue that it is too costly, too large to properly maintain, or is simply a sign of failed immigration policies.

Across Europe, however, countries have been forced to address illegal immigration in their own ways due to the huge influx of Syrian migrants seeking safe passage across their borders.

According to an announcement made by the Hungarian government on Monday, the country – which has seen over 390,000 migrants pass through this year, Yahoo! News reports – seems to have essentially solved its problem of illegal border-crossings.

After shutting down the country’s shared border with Croatia with the completion a razor-wire fence over the weekend, the Hungarian government announced Monday:

The border closure is working, it has effectively stopped illegal border-crossing… The Hungarian government is determined to keep the measures in place as long as is needed.

The closure has forced migrants to head west out of Croatia into Slovenia, which reportedly received 5,000 refugees Monday – twice the number the country originally stated it would accept each day.

Noting that just 41 people crossed the border on Sunday, the Hungarian government also added:

We are continuously monitoring the situation at the Slovenian, Croatian and Serbian borders, and are ready to react to any situation which might develop.”

In summer months prior to closing the border, Hungary had seen up to 10,000 people cross into the country on a daily basis.
