Lawmakers debate whether to try to impeach Trump for obstruction or leave the matter to voters next year.

Now that the Mueller report has been released, Democrats are grappling with the politically risky decision of what to do next: Use it to campaign against President Trump’s re-election bid or try to impeach him first.

“The responsibility now falls to Congress to hold the president accountable for his actions,” Rep. Jerry Nadler (D., N.Y.), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said Thursday, adding that impeachment is “one possibility, there are others. We obviously have to get to the bottom of what happened and take whatever action seems necessary.”

Republicans said little about the 400-plus-page report on Thursday, and the GOP-controlled Senate isn’t expected to pursue the removal from office of the Republican president.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) praised Attorney General William Barr’s handling of the report. “The nation is fortunate to have an experienced leader like Bill Barr in place to ensure maximum possible transparency,” he said.
