Tax Hikes

What to Know: School districts throughout Texas are asking voters for higher tax rates.
“Public school officials say the state’s complicated and dated school finance formula has stymied them as education costs and demands pile up leaving them no choice but to ask for more money locally,” the Dallas Morning News reports. “Area leaders are pushing the so-called TREs as crucial investments for communities. But opponents say districts need to better control spending.”
The TPPF Take: The Texas Public Policy Foundation has a plan that could eliminate much of the property tax burden for Texans.
“School property taxes for maintenance and operations make up the largest part of most Texan’s property tax bill,” says TPPF’s Vance Ginn. “Eliminating that tax using fiscal restraint would provide significant relief to Texas families and businesses.”
