What to Know: The Dallas Morning News is praising Dallas ISD’s merit-based pay system for teachers.

“Its innovative, merit-based teacher pay and evaluation system is now getting well-deserved national recognition for moving the needle on results,” the Morning News said in an editorial. “It’s one of the district’s most important reforms in years. The National Council on Teacher Quality has highlighted DISD’s Teacher Excellence Initiative as one of six in the nation getting results. It’s a testament that effective evaluation policies can lead to improvements in the quality of the teacher workforce.”

The TPPF Take: We should recognize and reward effective teachers.

“Most districts continue pay effective teachers the same as ineffective teachers, instead of providing incentives to our best teachers,” says TPPF’s Kara Belew. “Instead of basing teacher pay on seniority, more districts should adopt the Dallas model.”
