President assails former secretary of state’s efforts to save pact as May 12 deadline nears.

President Donald Trump criticized former Secretary of State John Kerry on Monday for meeting with foreign officials to discuss ways to save the nuclear deal with Iran.

“The United States does not need John Kerry’s possibly illegal Shadow Diplomacy on the very badly negotiated Iran Deal. He was the one that created this MESS in the first place!” Mr. Trump tweeted.

Mr. Trump appeared to be referring to Mr. Kerry’s meetings in recent weeks with Iranian officials to defend the 2015 nuclear agreement that was the signature achievement of his tenure as the top U.S. diplomat.
