Israel’s missile defense system intercepted two rockets while a third hit a building.

Israel intercepted rockets fired from the Gaza Strip on Friday, the military said, in what appeared to be an attack that targeted a memorial ceremony for a slain Israeli soldier.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack on a kibbutz near the Gaza border with Israel. But Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group that rules Gaza, holds the remains of the soldier killed in the 2014 Gaza war and put up a billboard with a picture of him overnight. A spokesman for Hamas said it didn’t fire the rockets but had erected the sign.

Israel’s missile-defense system intercepted two rockets while a third hit a building near the border, causing damage, the Israeli military said. Israel responded by striking Hamas positions in Gaza on Friday. No casualties were reported, but Palestinian health authorities said 40 Gazans were injured in clashes with Israeli forces on the border fence with Israel.
