The Media Controls the Message

Comey memo reveals Trump comments are well short of obstruction, despite media hype.
In the past two weeks since President Trump fired FBI Director Comey, the desperate, anti-Trump, ‘resistance’ media has been in a frenzy dredging up anything they can display as White House misconduct.
- Comey Fired
- Trump tweet threatening Comey with taped conversations
- Comey said Trump asked him for ‘loyalty’
- FBI asked for more funds before dismissal.
- Trump changed reasons for firing Comey
- Rosenstein threatened to quit! (outright lie)
- Trump released classified intelligence to Russians
What about the sources of these disclosures? Real? Credible?
Now, the release of a Comey memo claiming Trump asked him to drop the Flynn investigation, re-energizes the propaganda. The wild media attacks accelerate.
- By firing Comey, Trump is “covering up” Russian collusion
- Trump is”willfully violating” the law
- Comparing Trump to Nixon
- Trump “wanted to let the guy off who is going to rat on him”
- Trump is trying to “hide the truth”
- “obstruction of justice”
- “interfering” with investigations
- “changed reasons” for firing Comey
Then, of course, “Trump vs Comey – ALL NIGHT” on MSNBC last night!
It is clearer in 2017 than it has ever been, that the media doesn’t report the news, it controls the public message. Remember in February when MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski said it’s the media’s job to ‘control exactly what people think,’ not Trump’s.
When you look at the list of descriptive language above, you see the media’s blatant efforts at spinning the news to as negative a message as possible.
But, in their defense, is the news they are spinning just that negative?
- obviously, allegations of sharing intelligence with Russian diplomats is serious. People not in the room made the allegations. People in the room, said didn’t happen. (Who’s credibility should now be in question, media or Trump?)
- as Paul Ryan said, lets get the facts here first! (What a concept mainstream media)
- saying Trump “urged Comey to drop the case” or “pressured” him to end the investigation or was trying to obstruct justice is just not what the Comey memo quote reveals: “I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go,” Mr. Trump told Mr. Comey, according to the memo. “He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.” (This comment can in no way represent obstruction, pressure or any illegal act. It serves a political purpose, not a journalistic effort to spin this otherwise.)
Fake news now dishonest news? DR. SEBASTIAN GORKA, DEPUTY ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT: Sean, I think we have to go to the next stage. It’s no longer fake news. It’s now dishonest news. It’s all about the political agenda. It’s politics above national security. We’ve gone through the numbers. Just since February, let’s look at what has been leaked to the press. I’m just going to give you a handful. The A.P. leaked the conversation to Mexico, to the president of Mexico, “Washington Post” leaked the conversation to Australia, “Politico” leaked the one to Paris, and Reuters one of the calls to the Kremlin.
When is it going to stop? When is the conspiracy theory insanity of the resist movement, of the Ben Rhodes, Colin Carl (ph) nexus going to say, look, we’re not going to endanger national security anymore. We’re going to do actual journalism. This has to stop.
Cracks in the wall . “We cannot have this constant chaos and serious questions being raised virtually every single day,” Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said. “It is distracting from the ability to work on certain issues like health care reform, and the administration needs to get its house in order.”
Most Republicans on the Hill still are not going along with Democratic demands for a special prosecutor, but a handful are. Even more are opening the door to further inquiries into the latest Comey accusation.
Trump rips media at coast guard commencement. “Over the course of your life, you will find that things are not always fair and that things happen to you that you do not deserve, and that are not always warranted, but you have to put your head down and fight, fight, fight,” Trump said, saying that “no politician in history has been treated worse or more unfairly” by the media.
“Adversity makes you stronger—don’t give in and don’t back down and never stop doing what you know is right,” Trump said. “Nothing worth doing ever, ever, ever comes easy—the more righteous your fight, the more opposition you’ll face.”
“We are setting the stage for more things to come—the people understand what I’m doing and that’s the most important thing,” Trump said, adding that veterans will be taken care of. “I didn’t get elected to serve the Washington media—I got elected to serve the forgotten men and women and that’s exactly what I’m doing.”
There is no question that there have been a series of self inflicted wounds by the President over this last two weeks. He thought the left would celebrate the Comey dismissal, he was wrong. He underestimated the media hunger for anything to spin negative about the President, even information they would have loved if Obama had fired Comey. Marie Harf discusses Trump self inflicted wounds.
