Trump’s would-be assassin is mentally ill and in US Illegally.
On Saturday, a Trump rally in Las Vegas was interrupted when a young British man attempted to grab a cop’s holstered weapon.
After being detained, 20-year-old Michael Steven Sandford told a Secret Service agent that he had driven to Las Vegas from New Jersey in the black BMW he’d been living in with the sole purpose of killing Donald Trump.
He also said he would try again to kill Trump if he were released from custody.
Now, Sandford’s parents are saying they had reached out to U.S. authorities to ask for help in bringing their son home before he was arrested, claiming that the young man is autistic and has severe mental and emotional problems.
Sandford’s public defender has said that his autism does not affect his being competent to stand trial.
The court also heard that Sandford suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder and anorexia in addition to his Asperger’s — and that he had escaped from a hospital in England at age 14, where he was being treated for his mental illness.
