The headlines are damning in today's Washington Post synopsis of a CBS interview with former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. Rex Tillerson on Trump: ‘Undisciplined, doesn’t like to read', impulsive, relys on instincts vs facts, and tries to do illegal things.

But when you read deeper or watch the interview and see Tillerson's exact quote, he is not making these type of criticisms. He is making observations. But, as WaPo states in the opening paragraph, they prefer to "read between the lines" to find the most negative way to spin Tillerson's comments. Lets look at a couple of these "between the lines" points: Undisciplined. The quote: “What was challenging for me coming from the disciplined, highly process-oriented ExxonMobil corporation,” Tillerson said, was “to go to work for a man who is pretty undisciplined, ..., but rather just kind of says, ‘This is what I believe.’ ” Trump was not a corporate CEO type. He is an entrepreneur who wants to get things done. Entrepreneurs don't waste time reading reports, they take action based on their stated goals. Trump stated his goals on the campaign trail just like everyone else did. Now he is trying to get them done, with speed. Doesn't like to read. The quote: "...doesn’t like to read, doesn’t read briefing reports, doesn’t like to get into the details of a lot of things,". A lot of presidents didn't like to read the voluminous briefing and policy papers presented to them. Reagan, Clinton, Bush, Obama, so this is not a big deal. And, when you think of Trump the entrepreneur, he is all about directing people to get things done. Why have them around if they are not going to get things done and instead present you with detailed briefs to read. If you read between these lines you see a man focused on results. Relys on instinct vs facts. The quote: Tillerson said Trump believes he is acting on his instincts ..." “He acts on his instincts; in some respects, that looks like impulsiveness,” Tillerson said. “But it’s not his intent to act on impulse. I think he really is trying to act on his instincts.” Pretty clear I think. He doesn't act impulsively, just fast. He doesn't ignore facts, he just says here is what we need done, you can convince me otherwise if you want. Tries to do illegal things. The quote. “So often, the president would say, ‘Here’s what I want to do, and here’s how I want to do it,’ " Tillerson said, according to the Houston Chronicle, “and I would have to say to him, ‘Mr. President, I understand what you want to do, but you can’t do it that way. It violates the law.’ ” Nowhere in this quote does Tillerson say that Trump is actively trying to do illegal things. He says Trump is stating his objectives, his people who are responsible for this are saying there are some legal limitations, which there always are, and he then says to his lieutenants, figure it out. What is wrong with that? This sums up the problem most of the country has with the mainstream media. They prefer to spin the news instead of report the news. And, in President Trump's case, 92% of it is negatively spun - on purpose - to get the President they do not like. You can see this everyday, all day long in every media outlet and in every story, whether it is about the president or not (think George HW Bush's funeral this week).
