National Anthem

VT Coach Explains National Anthem

8/13/14 Virginia Tech Basketball Coach Buzz Williams knew that in order to enact change within college basketball players, he would first have to enact change among his own team. So Coach Williams decided to start a very special Veteran’s day tradition… Coach Williams explains the motivation behind his tradition below, “I wanted the players to understand how fortunate they were to be able to play this great game, to earn a scholarship, and to have people pay money to watch them play. Everything comes at a cost and each and every one of us is fortunate that someone else, in someway, is sacrificing something so we can go about our every day lives.” With the help of our veterans, Coach Williams is about to teach his players a lesson in respect that they won’t soon forget. Coach Buzz Williams gathered his men's basketball team to discuss the meaning of the National Anthem and recognize those who have served. This clip is Coach Williams further explaining what the national Anthem means, no matter what country you are from. It ends with as he puts it,arguably the best live rendition of the anthem, by Whitney Houston. When Virginia Tech basketball coach Buzz Williams saw the level of disrespect that was present among college basketball players, he couldn’t just stand around see it continue to happen. One of the things that irked him the most? Much to Coach Williams’s dismay, he would see players not paying attention and goofing around during their own National Anthem!
