Senate votes in favor of Trump’s pick to succeed Tillerson despite tough questions over CIA chief’s temperament and views on military force.

The Senate on Thursday confirmed Mike Pompeo to be the next secretary of state, ending one of the most divisive confirmation battles for the nation’s top diplomatic job in recent memory. Mr. Pompeo was confirmed by a vote of 57-42 in the Republican-controlled Senate. Mr. Pompeo drew the support of only six Democrats and one independent who caucuses with the Democrats. That is a sharp erosion in support from just a year ago, when he was confirmed as director of the Central Intelligence Agency with 14 Democrats and one independent—and a sign of growing discord and distrust between the parties on Capitol Hill, especially over foreign policy. Like Mr. Trump’s previous nominee, Mr. Pompeo was confirmed by a relatively narrow margin. Historically, secretaries of state have been confirmed by big bipartisan majorities.
