Afghanistan
Obviously Afghanistan has been the primary focal point in the War on Terror since September 11, 2001 when the United States was attacked and about 3,000 people were murdered. The US government identified Osama bin Laden and the Al-Qaeda organization based in and allied with the Taliban, the Islamic government in Afghanistan, as the perpetrators of the attacks. While political and military mistakes have been made in this 10 year conflict, we have been successful and destroying the violent Al-Qaeda and Taliban leadership and allowing a government friendly to its neighbors to hopefully evolve. This evolution will take time and be difficult, so our commitment should not waver, but our need for regular military forces in Afghanistan has ended. Continuing to watch and appropriately react to developments in Afghanistan will be an important political issue.

Incompetence & Failure!

from The Gray Area:
8/16/21:

Today President Biden gave a national address regarding the situation in Afghanistan. In the speech he stood by his decision, he blamed Trump and he believes his policy will be successful. In the face of such an obvious foreign policy failure, Biden doubles down on the incompetence that drove the strategy. Will another country, or group of countries ever again trust America to stand up to its promises? No! We walked out on North Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and now Afghanistan. Leaving refugees to flee in panic and others left to die at the hands of their captors. And, America's enemies emboldened. Nicely done, Biden. We have a weak political class and have for decades, except Reagan & Trump. When we go to war, we don't go in to win and we don't have the collective stomach for the fight in order to finish it. Five points about what Biden said today. Mostly lies, incompetence & politics. 1. He blamed Trump. Pompeo's response: “It looks like the Biden administration has just failed in its execution of its own plan,” Pompeo told Fox News host Chris Wallace on “Fox News Sunday.” “This reminds me of when we have seen previous administrations allow embassies to be overrun. It’s starting to feel that way. It also looks like there’s a bit of panic having to reinsert soldiers to get them out. The plan should have been, much like we had, was that we would have an orderly conditions-based way to think about how to draw down our forces there. Trump's response:

2. He believes diplomacy (talking) will do the work better in Afghanistan. 3. Not like Saigon? 4. Compares his strategy to Obama's a decade ago. Good comparison. Obama left Iraq to ISIS. Trump fixed it. Biden leaves Afghanistan to the Taliban. Next? America leaves Afghanistan, China walks in. Afghanistan, through the Taliban leadership and their connection to China, will re-emerge to negatively affect the USA over the coming decade, just as the failure of Obama's pullout in Iraq did. 5. What could Biden have done? Robert Gates, Barack Obama’s defense secretary, famously said that Joe Biden has “been wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue over the past four decades.” That isn’t an exaggeration.
